This is the first in a series of firearms informational posts. If you have any questions, PLEASE ask. No question is a dumb question here. I’m keeping it basic and simple, so those of you with tons of firearms experience, try not to get bored on me, okay?
1. Barrel. The barrel is the part the bullet moves through after it is fired. The muzzle is the open end of the barrel that the bullet exits the gun through.

I got a little chuckle at your comment after rule #3 – I do the same thing. People give me funny looks but hey – better safe than sorry…good muscle memory is a good thing!

Canadian Firearm Safety calls this Acts and Prove:
THE VITAL FOUR ACTS OF FIREARMS SAFETY
* Assume every firearm is loaded.
* Control the muzzle direction at all times.
* Trigger finger must be kept off the trigger and out of the trigger guard.
* See that the firearm is unloaded – PROVE it safe.
PROVE
* Point the firearm in the safest available direction.
* Remove all cartridges.
* Observe the chamber.
* Verify the feeding path.
* Examine the bore.
