National Geographic’s series, Doomsday Preppers is now in its 5th week and I once again got to preview an upcoming episode for you all. Have you been keeping up with the Preppers? The episode “Nine Meals Away From Anarchy” airs this Tuesday March 6th, and features some pretty unique individuals.
The format remains the same–Preppers get to show what they are doing to prepare for a particular “doomsday” scenario. Now, let’s be honest, most of these preppers are undoubtedly prepping for any number of catastrophic events from the super wacky to something more run-of-the-mill such as a job loss. However, for the show they have to pick just one event they are preparing for and it’s never an ordinary one (that wouldn’t be good television, you know). They are then assessed by off-screen experts as to their level of preparedness for the particular event they claimed to be prepping for. A little bit of education and a whole lot of “TV”. Still there are ideas to be gleaned and some motivation to keep prepping (or start prepping) to be found in these shows.
This episode starts with Mike and Lisa Mester. Living in Georgia suburbia, they are prepping for civil unrest from an economic collapse. Which, by the way, I think is more likely than the show’s experts did. Mike has older children, his oldest in college. The family has thought through their preparedness pretty thoroughly and have some really good preparations in order and as a bonus were quite “normal” looking. Like we could be neighbors. Only my dog isn’t as scary as his are.
Preston White from Colorado is prepping for nuclear fallout from the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan. Really? But once you get past that, this guy as an impressive amount of seeds stored! Amazing, in fact. Hopefully he’s keeping them all stored properly so all his efforts can pay off in his garden in years to come. And hubby really liked the water to fire machine. That was cool.
The final prepper featured in this episode is Riley Cook. He also lives in Colorado, only a little higher in elevation than Preston. I grew up in Colorado, so this was actually a pretty entertaining episode for me to watch with two of the three featured preppers from my home state. Anyway, Riley is prepping for a polar shift. Seriously? I’ve decided I just need to ignore what they say they’re prepping for on this show since they surely had to come up with something that the producers approved of. Riley is a welder which made his segment all that much more interesting to my welder husband. He uses his welding skills to create some really intense survival gear. Like underground bunkers. To be fair, his underground bunker is pretty sweet compared to a similarly styled shelter I have been through. It’s almost “homey”, but not quite. And the handcart is very cool. I’ve always wanted a handcart. Maybe he’d send me plans for it if I told him I was from Colorado, too . . .
For a little extra challenge during the show, you can play one of my favorite games while watching Doomsday Preppers–“Name that Food Storage Company” during the shots of their food supply rooms. Oh, look! There’s cases from the LDS Cannery! There are some from Honeyville! Hey, that guy had Thrive cans! Okay, so I’m easily entertained. You’ll probably be entertained enough just watching the show.
Doomsday Preppers airs Tuesday nights at 9pm EST on the National Geographic channel. For more information on the Doomsday Preppers series, check out their page at National Geographic.
Keep preparing! Angela

I don’t get NatGeo and they aren’t showing the full episodes on their website. In one of the short videos, the lady talked about coating eggs with mineral oil to dry store them for a longer time. Very interesting. I don’t recall hearing that technique before.
