If you’ve been into a store lately, you’ve probably noticed all the Halloween decorations, costumes, and candy are on display. Another item that you may find in abundance because of the upcoming holiday is light sticks. Because of Halloween, you can usually find these in varying sizes, shapes, and colors and often less expensive than the glow sticks in the camping section. Now is a great time to stock up on glow sticks for your 72 hour kit, your camping supplies, your car kits, and just to have around for every day emergencies (like a last minute birthday party gift). We don’t use glow sticks very often, but when the power’s out and the kids are headed to bed a little unnerved, light sticks are a lifesaver. If you wait until just after Halloween, you might even catch them on sale for even less. Also be on the lookout for deals this month on other light sources like headlamps and flashlights in conjunction with the Halloween sales. Happy lighting!
Keep preparing! Angela

Please be aware that light sticks are a poisoning hazard for pets. When a pet chews on them, they ingest the toxic substance inside. In an emergency situation it may be impossible to get any treatment for a sick or dying pet, so it’s good to be mindful of that–if you choose to make them part of your emergency plan, you can store them in a safe place and be careful when using them not to set them down where a family pet could be tempted by them.

I also often see light sticks in the dollar stores.
