Welcome to the monthly challenge series at Food Storage and Survival! Each month this year I’ll be issuing a challenge to you. I know quite a few of you are very active in preparing, but I don’t want any of you falling into the trap of reading blog posts, books, and articles, watching videos, and listening to podcasts, but not actually getting out and getting anything done to further your own preparedness. So I’ll be hosting monthly challenges. There might even be prizes involved for participating. Each challenge will run for a month, although most won’t take a full month to accomplish, so just do them during the month when it’s convenient for you. So much nicer than an actual emergency that has to be dealt with immediately regardless of your personal schedule, right?
Make a list
January’s challenge is pretty simple. Make a list for your own preparedness needs, then prioritize that list. What do you need to be better prepared? My own list is divided into three sections–To Do, To Learn, and To Buy. Use this printable as a template to make your own preparedness list! I’ll be doing this along with you–it’s been a while since I cleaned up and expanded my list.
Don’t hold back on this list. Maybe you’ll need more than one piece of paper. Be as thorough as you can, but don’t stress about getting everything–you can always add to it later. If you have other family members involved in your preparedness plans, get them in on the list building. Make it like a brainstorm–everything is welcome. This is the BIG list, so don’t think just because it may seem unrealistic right now it shouldn’t be on the list. And if you list a long range goal, go ahead and break it into smaller steps. Remember, this list isn’t set in stone, so you can always add to it or delete from it any time in the future if your plans or needs change.
Prioritize
Once you have your list filled up, it’s time to prioritize it. Use these four questions to move the most important items to the top of your list. Some you will be able to accomplish this year, others will wait. I’ve had some things on my list for years and still don’t have them done. And that’s okay. This list is going to help you focus your efforts on the things that are most important for your own family’s preparedness.
Act
BONUS: If you’ve got a list together and prioritized, go ahead and get started on one of the top items on your list! And if food storage is on that list, consider picking up a copy of my book, Food Storage for Self-Sufficiency and Survival to help you out.
Let me know how it goes!
Comment here on this post, or send me an email or leave a comment on my Facebook page. I want to know how your list building is going! Comments and emails will be entered in a random drawing at the end of the month to win something you’ll love that I haven’t quite decided on yet, so get your lists made!
Keep preparing! Angela

My husband and I are each writing a prioritized “brain dump” list which we will then put together. We “woke up” last May and have accomplished a great deal since then but of course have a lot still to do. Looking forward to working on your challenges.

What a great way to start the new year. Challenges are always a fun way to accomplish what you were going to do anyway. It helps me focus. Can’t wait to see what is next. Now off to make my list.

I am a major list maker- and had actually started my newest list for my food goals this year! My home schooled daughter and I had great fun brainstorming our list- so far, we have everything from learning to make homemade yogurt to teaching her basic needle and thread sewing. (We’re up to #32) Love the idea of prioritizing- will be adding these into our home school days. There is so much to do!!
