There are some hard times ahead for many of us, and we don’t know from one day to the next which of us the hard times may fall on. We don’t know if it will be tomorrow or next month or ten years from now. It doesn’t take an earthquake or other natural disaster to make a personal emergency. In our area, one of our mines is shutting down without any hint or promise of opening again, and if they do open again there is no date set for it. Of course they’ll hire their guys back if and when they re-open, but for now that leaves a lot of folks in our community without a job and with an uncertain future just in time for the holidays. Some will take one of the few other jobs in the area in hopes that the mine will open back up, but many will have to either temporarily or permanently relocate themselves with or without their families to find work.
So, with that in mind, today I just want to send a plea your way. And that is to do something. Pick up an extra can or more of food at the store. Put some water in storage. Get some extra blankets. Set some money into savings for a rainy day. Take some first aid training. Anything. You might start with the basics that will help your family through an emergency, even if that emergency is a personal one like a job loss or cut in pay. Start small if you need to, but start. Don’t just read about being prepared, get up and do something about it. Please. Those who depend on you will thank you for it.
Keep preparing! Angela

Thank you for posting. It's a heartbreaking reality…and we DO need to do something, even just a little bit, every chance we can.

Time to take action is before we need it! So many folks are being hurt right now…my heart just goes out to them!
Have a good holiday, and thanks for such a timely post!

Keep chipping away at paying off your debt. And learn to cook from scratch or off the land as much as possible.
The less cash flow you need, the better off you will be – now, and in case of an emergency. And the more able you will be to help your family and friends if needed.

I'm here from Moo said the mama's blog. Lots of great info here that I will come back to peruse over time. But what I really love is your playlist!! :-) Some of them are my very, very favorite songs that I grew up with my dad playing as often as possible!! Oh the memories!! Thanks for the warm fuzzies in the midst of serious business. ;-) Blessings! Kris

Great post and funny you should mention that. I'm going to be busy this weekend doing two important things.
1. I'm canning grape jelly and maybe some other things that will use up grapes. I got a hold of a case of grapes from a produce truck that broke down in our town. Nothing better than free grapes to make jelly with.
That makes me give one more suggestion, Become friends with the owner or tow truck drivers who tow in the big rigs because you may find some really awesome deals on really good produce the next time a big rig breaks down in your area.
2. we are splitting and stacking the wood we hauled in from our forest service wood permit.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
You just never know what's going to happen tomorrow so being prepared today is the way to go!
In the past 3 years, we've endured the remnants of a hurricane (in the Ohio valley-no power for a week), our well was struck by lightning and destroyed and now my husband is laid off. It sounds like a bad country music song, eh? Thank Goodness for preparation! Thank Goodness for food storage!

I agree that the time to do anything is always now. I would respectfully encourage us all to prayerfully ask Heavenly Father where to start. He will lead you through even the darkest of days.

Oh, that's too bad! My heart goes out to those folks. I hope all turns out well for them.

I agree with you about doing just something. Anything. Just start. If you have a week's worth of food in your home, you're better off than most people. If you know how to make just one nutritious meal out of locally grown foods, you're in better shape than many.
And it grows from that. :)
