It’s been two years since the last chicks, so knowing they’ll be slowing down on egg production (although right now they’re laying plenty), we’re introducing some new chicks to the flock this year. A baker’s dozen of “hatchery choice pullets”. That means we’ve got 13 random breed chicks that are more likely hens than roosters. Hopefully they’re mostly hens. We opted for a few of each kind they had. They’re sure cute. Against his mother’s advice, son decided they needed to sleep in his room the first night. He didn’t get a lot of sleep. Baby chicks are not quiet. We’re contemplating clearing out the old chick box for them or finding another large box so they can move out of the house–the chick box got turned into a wood box when the other chickens grew out of it. Anyway, here they are. Maybe at some point I’ll figure out what breeds they all are!
Based on my online research, I’m guessing the chick above is an Ancona.
Cute little buggers. The two dark breeds have feathers down their legs. We’ll see if that stays as they grow. Maybe some variation of Brahma? Most of them already have names thanks to the kids. Fun spring stuff happening on the farm! :)
Keep preparing! Angela

I insist the cutest baby animals are chicks & lambs. And I’ve had both! Right now I only have lambs…three of them…born in the last month…
Gotta love little animals!!

About 6 years ago, my dad brought home 6 chicks and 2 ducklings from Quality Farm & Fleet. They were a lot of fun and my 5 younger sisters loved having them in the house. I would say to get them outside as soon as you can; they sure stink!

I keep thinking maybe I should get more chicks since my hens are three years old. But, I have to bring the three hens in at night (raccoon attack) and just cannot bear to have chicks AND hens in here. Seeing pictures of new chicks makes me want to go get fertile eggs and let my broody hen do her job. They are sweet.

They are adorable! One day, hopefully this year, I will get that chicken coop built and get some little ones of my own.

Love those chicks! Congratulations on a nice looking new flock. I finally got a coop and run set up in back yard and ordered 10 day old chicks. 2 each of Opingtons, Speckled Sussexs, White and Partrige Rocks, and Dominiques. they are 2 and 1/2 weeks old and are living (temporarily!) in a large stock tank in our sun room. I use 2 to 3 inches of pine shavings on their floor (and have not had any smell at all. Of course we keep the ceiling fan on 24/7. Our girls are for eggs..not meat. My 87 year old Mum sits by the tank and watches their antics. All women love chicks.
