The Goal Zero Nomad 7 portable solar charger is a slick little charger made for taking with you wherever you need to go. I’m not to the point of powering my entire house by solar, but I do like having a means to charge small electronics when the power is out and this little solar charger does a great job.
The Nomad 7 is compact and lightweight–mine weighed in at just under 15 oz. without any accessory cables. It would make a fine addition to an emergency kit, and is small enough to be included in your every day carry gear if you wanted to.
What can it charge?
The charger has output ports for 12 volt and USB cables. It comes with a 12 volt adapter with a car charger sized output, so most things you charge with your car plugs can be used with the Nomad 7. According to Goal Zero, the Nomad 7 will charge handheld electronics like your cell phone, smart phone, mp3 player, or GPS.
It can also charge the Goal Zero Guide 10 Plus battery pack.
The Guide 10 Plus is a small battery pack that comes with four rechargeable AA batteries. Hooked up to the Nomad 7 or other solar charger, it will charge either AA or AAA batteries. The batteries can then be removed and used in any compatible device or left in the Guide 10. The Guide 10 has a USB output port, so with charged AA batteries installed in it, it can be used to charge any device you can plug in with a USB cable. Again, this is a small device charger, so you’re not going to power anything huge–just handheld electronics, up to small tablets and e-readers.
The Guide 10 also has an integrated LED flashlight. It doesn’t have a large light output, but it’s enough to help you see where you’re going in the dark. Super handy.
